Daehangno, various attractions and young cultural area

Perhaps foreigners will not know Daehangno. However, this area is as much a tourist attraction as Hongade, and it is also a representative theatrical performance area in Korea.

On weekends, it is crowded with young people like Hongdae, and on weekdays you can enjoy this place more freely than Hongdae.

The red line on the map is a popular route through Marronnier Park, Naksan Park and Ihwa Mural Village.

Marronnier Park

Marronnier Park entrance

Marronnier Park is close to Exit 2 of Hyehwa Station on Subway Line 4. Built in 1975, the park offers a cozy atmosphere, although it is not large, and you can probably see performances or busking.

This building is the ARKO Art Theater which surrounds the park. This building and the ARKO Art Museum next to it were built by Korean representative architect Kim Swoo-geun and registered as Seoul Future Heritage.

To get to Ihwa Mural Village and Naksan Park, go down the road in front of this building and turn right at the second alley.

How to get to Ihwa Mural Village

This is the alley to Naksan Park and Ihwa Mural Village. You can see the sign marked ‘Naksan Park 220m’.

It is good to see the scenery of Seoul along the railing, and you can see the works that the artists have installed.

There are students who are dressed in uniforms in the style of 1980, but they are not actually students. They just rented uniforms to enjoy the retro atmosphere.

This village is located near the top of Naksan mountain (or hill, 125m).

At one end of the village is Seoul Fortress Wall, which was first built in the Joseon Dynasty and surrounded Seoul. Most of it is reconstructed, but you will see some remaining early walls.

And if you go down about 1km along this wall, you will reach the gate of Dongdaemun. See “Seoul’s long-standing commercial district, Dongdaemun and Jongno, Course 5“.

Naksan Park

A little further from the village in the direction of Naksan Park, there is a road leading to the pavilion in the photo.

You can go back to Daehangno through Naksan Park along this road.

On weekends, Daehangno is very crowded like Hongdae, but on weekdays it is quiet and nice to relax.

Although the atmosphere is different from Hongdae due to the nearby art centers and musical centers, there are also a lot of young people’s favorite accessories shops, theme cafes and atmosphere bars. In the next post, I’ll focus on eating and drinking.
